The the conference will take place in a central location of Fez at the Fez's Cultural complex "Complexe Culturel de Fès", located in Palestine Avenue "Avenue de Palestine", kindly offred by the local authorities to the “Ecole National D’Architecture de Fès, Moroc”. National School of Architecture in Fes, Morocco.
Fes was a former capital of Morocco. The original part of the old city is today’s called FEZ al bali. It is an authentic medieval city with complex and labyrinth alleys and considered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It has the oldest continuously functioning university in the world which is the University of Al-Karaouine that is founded in 859 C.E. Al Karaouine University played a leading role in the cultural and academic relations between the Islamic world and Europe in the middle ages. The university has produced numerous scholars who have strongly influenced the intellectual and academic history of the world such as Ibn Rushayd al-Sabti, Pope Sylvester II and Maimonides.
The big Qarawiyyin Mosque which is the most famous mosque of Morocco was also built in the same year. Religious, commercial, residential etc. buildings have been erected since the foundation of the city and many still exit until our present time. The visitor to the old district would have a pleasant and peaceful feeling as he/ she wanders in the winding and narrow streets that is shaded from sun by projected and beautifully ornamented Mashrabiyahs (i.e. windows with wooden latticework) which provides an enclosure to the street and breaks the monotony of the urban context. The design of the city at the architecture and urban level is considered by a number of Western scholars as a good example of the sustainable city that is capable to fulfill its' inhabitants physical, social, psychological, spiritual and environmental needs and aspirations along the history. After visiting the city you will have two homes: one is your home city and the other one is Fes. We welcome you in the capital of academia and sustainability.
